SISTER
Young girl standing
At the side of the road,
Looking for passage to somewhere new.
She’d prefer to reach the City of Angels,
But she’ll settle for Saskatoon.
Chorus:
Well the night highway is lined with gold,
But you can’t see it in the dark.
Tonight the night highway
Carries my sister in its arms.
Young girl searching
For a ticket through life
Some independence, something to believe in.
She imagines that the truth can be found,
But she’ll have to settle for the joy of seeking.
Repeat chorus
Young girl travelling
And I love her so
I hope she’s alright.

Poor Boy

POOR BOY
I can’t imagine just what I am doing here in this poor part of town. I’ve got no money, no food, no damn cigarettes—today I’m feeling kind of down. And I’m in trouble with the landlord cause I haven’t paid my rent in a while. I’d need a haircut, new job and some kind of miracle to be living in style.
Chorus:
People say I’m crazy, people say I’m a fool, but I swear I’m a different kind. I’m in the wrong place, wrong time, wrong kind of circumstances for this poor boy to shine.
I’ve got a girlfriend, she’s named Kim, but I haven’t seen her in a couple of days. Cause she’s been hanging round with Tom on the second floor, or so my neighbours all say.
Repeat chorus
If you can help me, good Lord, please don’t hesitate, I’m hanging on every day. I’d go to church but I’m afraid something terrible would happen to me on the way.
Oh, someday I will make it, someday I’ll get along, and when I do my life will be just fine. I’m in the wrong place, wrong time, wrong kind of circumstances for this poor boy to shine. I’m in the wrong place, wrong time, wrong kind of circumstances for this poor boy to shine.

Way of the World

WAY OF THE WORLD
Put away your guns now
It’s time to be negotiating
Put your fires out for awhile
I’ve heard about your problems
They’re infinitely complicated
But only worse whenever people die
Chorus 1:
Cause all the sorrow you’ve made
Will never change the way of the world
The way of the world
No, all those bullets and flames
Will never change the way of the world
The way of the world
Disengage your bombs now
Loosen up your iron grip
Your cause is only slipping through your hands
Come into the circle
Where the human race resides
Nothing’s easy here,
But we’re all working to survive
Chorus 2:
And all the sorrow you’ve made
Will never change the way of the world
The way of the world
No all those missiles and planes
Will never change the way of the world
The way of the world
Bridge:
Ever since the dawn of time
We have struggled against fear and war and crime
And what we worship is to blame
So-called progress and the politics of gain
So put away your doctrines
Your history books so full of lies
And take a look at where you are right now
And think about the reasons
You were born to live this life
And realize your rage
Is just a futile road to ride
Repeat chorus 1&2

GOV'T SCRUB
I do not offer you diamonds,
I do not offer you blue sky,
I do not offer you shelter,
I do not offer you a ride .
Chorus:
I do not offer you much,
I do not offer you much,
I'm sorry, won' t you please
Accept my apologies,
But I do not offer you much.
I do not offer you money,
I do not offer you a job,
I do not offer you freedom of the press
And I do not offer you love.
Repeat chorus
I do not offer you the devil,
I do not offer you God,
I do not offer you guidance,
In choosing either of the above.
I do not offer you justice,
I do not offer you good health,
I do not offer education,
Forgiveness, explanation, free advice,
Or anything else.

POWERLINE ROAD
There’s nothing happening in the afternoon;
All is quiet on Powerline Road.
Nobody sitting on the summer lawns
All the way down Powerline Road.
No dogs are barking, no children playing,
No voices to be heard at all;
Nobody laughing, nobody crying
Anywhere down Powerline Road.
Chorus:
Cause nobody lives, nobody lives
On Powerline Road anymore,
Cause there’s poison in the ground,
Danger all around
All the way down Powerline Road
All the way down Powerline Road.
Out in a lot behind a rusty fence
At the end of Powerline Road,
There stands a building like a monument
To the fate of Powerline Road.
Nobody works there, nobody anywhere,
The ghosts have all been and gone.
No silver lining, there’s nothing happening
Anywhere down Powerline Road.

SWEET CHARIOT
You’re going to be okay as long as this good night surrounds your body like a cloak to shield the light.
Swing low, sweet chariot, flames will burn; swing low, sweet chariot, and then you’ll learn sweet chariot won’t come to take you home.
You’re going to get ahead when your worst enemies pick you apart and leave you begging on your knees.
Swing low, sweet chariot, run you down; swing low, sweet chariot till you have found sweet chariot won’t come to take you home.

ALMOST LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT
That lady in red is the one I will marry,
I can’t tell you why I just said it out loud.
We only met once and we only talked briefly;
I can’t even say she’d remember my name here and now.
But there was a look we exchanged over coffee
While talking a storm about the weather outside.
Well, that was last Tuesday and that was the first day
My horoscope said I would find love; I think it was right—
Almost love at first sight.
She’s got someone else but I’ve got me a feeling
That her and this other man soon will be done.
I don’t have his charm and I don’t have his money,
But destiny’s stronger than anything under the sun.
Should I ask her out, should I give her my number,
Or play hard-to-get, can you tell me what’s right?
Should I buy her flowers or send her a letter,
Or tell her in person the hundred sweet nothings I’d write?
Almost love at first sight.
Bridge:
Sounds kind of crazy but I had a vision
Of a house with a big yard and two televisions,
And a two-car garage and a dog and two fat cats,
And two bouncing babies and me and her there side by side.
Cause there was a look we exchanged over coffee
While talking a storm about the weather outside.
Well, that was last Tuesday and that was the first day
My horoscope said I would find love; I think it was right;
I think it was right—
Almost love at first sight.

My Back Yard
03:24
|

MY BACK YARD
I’ve got this place on the south side of town
There used to be nothing but trees all around,
But now that’s changed,
My back yard just ain’t the same.
I used to ride ten miles to the city line
Down and old dirt road, it’s now six lanes wide
And paved with pain,
My back yard just ain’t the same.
Oh, I used to have a crazy dream
To raise a family in this place I’m in,
But now I see it’s nowhere near the same,
And I’m not sure it’s still worth passing on.
They talk about building another mall
Want to turn my land into the parking lot
Without my say,
My back yard just ain’t the same.
Tear down the fences for the powerlines
Old oak tree into a neon sign
It seems insane,
My back yard just ain’t the same
Oh, I used to be so wild and free,
I thought this place was only meant for me,
But now it don’t feel like my home anymore,
And in my mind I’ve got no place to go.
When all my days are finally done
I guess this place will be long gone,
And it’s a shame,
My back yard just ain’t the same.
It seems insane,
But my back yard just ain’t the same.

Burn for Something More

BURN FOR SOMETHING MORE
Jesse went roaming far out of town;
He’d had enough of the same old ups and down.
Didn’t tell his family, Didn’t tell his friends,
Just quit his life to start over again.
Chorus:
Another lonely night, another endless road
Another inner fight, another desperate soul
Another heart that burns for something,
Burns for something more.
Jesse drove westward in his old Ford;
A hundred places he’d never seen before.
But something so familiar was in every single on,
Yeah, every town reminded him of home.
Every stop was a stale adventure,
Every street held the same old woes,
Every face like his own reflection,
And life had the same rewards.
Repeat chorus
Jesse grew tired of his new life,
And soon enough he finally realized
That nothing much had changed him
Despite how much he tried,
And all that he would find he’d find inside.
He created a new beginning
To an ending carved in stone,
And he saw that he wasn’t winning,
So he started off for home.
Repeat chorus

THREE ANGELS
Three angels stand in the corner,
Three angels came through my door,
Three angels wait here for me to decide once more.
Three angels stay in my conscience,
Three angels haunt all my dreams,
Three angels realize that I’m not quite all that I seem.
Chorus:
Well, it’s a long way, a long way to heaven
But in the meantime, I’ll be staying here.
But when I finally decide me,
I’ve got three angels to guide me.
Three angels came out of nowhere,
Three angels formed in thin air,
Three angels swept down to follow me round everywhere.
Three angels bless me with beauty,
Three angels whisper my name,
Three angels touch me, but I never can reach them the same.

SALT OF THE EARTH
He’s the salt of the earth,
He’s a man out of time,
He’s an innocent bystander to his own crimes.
He don’t’ keep with the score,
Cause he don’t play the game;
He’s a victim of circumstance,
He’s not to blame.
Chorus:
For everything they say he’s done,
Every time he’s hurt someone,
He’s not a bad man, he’s just a little dumb.
But they want to put him away for good,
And god knows that ain’t right.
Cause he’s the salt of the earth,
Just a diamond in rough,
He’s a menace to no one who ain’t out of touch.
He ain’t cut from the same stone
As the ones who decide
That he’s mad or unstable and should be locked inside.
Repeat chorus
Who says what’s wrong and what’s right?
Salt of the earth, salt of the earth;
He’s the salt of the earth.

Little Victories

LITTLE VICTORIES
In between the good and bad
So many things left to be done
And in between the where and how
All that we’ve accomplished
And all that we’ve survived
And all the other little things
That let us know we’re alive
And all the little journeys
And all the little trials
And all the little victories
That make it all worthwhile
In between the left and right
So many things that are confusing
Some have made us what we are
Like all the new opinions
Like all the different styles
Like all the other little things
That we accept or deny
And all the little answers
We’ve come to realize
And all the little victories
That make it all worthwhile
In between the then and now
So many places we have gone
In some of them we left our mark
All the little stories
And all the little signs
And all the true reminders
That let us know we have time
And all the precious memories
Of all the receding miles
And all the little victories
That make it all worthwhile

Down on the Waterfront

DOWN ON THE WATERFRONT
I had my ticket for the last train out of town,
But I made it too late, so I had to wait around
Till the morning, till the morning.
The station closed, so I had to go somewhere to hang out,
So I took a cab to a coffeeshop in the sleeping heart of downtown,
And it was snowing, so I went inside.
And I saw so many aching faces looking blankly back at me;
It soon clued-in who they were: they were children of the street,
And they were spending the loose change they’d found that day.
Well, I sat down but I felt uneased
As I overheard a young girl talk of life on the street.
She said—
Chorus:
Down on the waterfront there’s a place you can sleep,
Where the watchman can’t see you and you might find some peace.
She said, down on the waterfront is a place you can go,
It’s dirty, but it’s safe and warm.
I saw her face out of the corner of my eye,
She looked to be about twelve years old, but she talked like thirty-five,
And she was holding some younger kid’s hand.
Well, I wanted bad to up and go, but I couldn’t even stand;
A voice inside me told me: “Stop and think about it, man,”
I live for granted, I live for granted.
So I sat there still but I felt uneased
As I overheard that young girl talk of live on the street.
She said—
Repeat chorus
Well, morning came around finally after all eternity;
I picked up my belongings and I walked out to the street,
And the sun was shining down on me.
I caught my train and made it home later on that day;
Tried to lose the night before, but it wouldn’t go away.
I felt so humble, I felt so humble.
And when I think about it I feel so uneased,
Cause I still hear that young girl talk of life on the street.
She said—
Repeat chorus

Not the World
(words and music by Pete Webb)
Train lines and road signs
Lead the way into the dark
Old lies and sad eyes
A curse to bear inside the heart
Chorus:
Well, this is not the world
No, this is not the world
That I once knew
Barbed wire fences
Rising up above the fields
Chimneys and tragedies
Burned into our history
Chorus:
Well, this is not the world
No, this is not the world
That I once knew
